Infant dies of carbon monoxide from gas-powered generator placed inside home

NOPD officers found the child unresponsive inside the home after the mother of the three-month-old woke up ill and saw her child was not breathing.

NEW ORLEANS — An infant girl has died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a gas-powered generator placed inside the home which had no electricity.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, it happened Friday morning at a home in the 4400 block of Cessna Court in the Pines Village neighborhood of New Orleans East.

Responding NOPD officers found the child unresponsive inside the home after the mother of the three-month-old woke up ill and saw her child was not breathing, as our partners at Nola.com report.

Police tell our partners that the home did not have power and that the mother had placed a generator inside which caused "toxic fumes to emanate throughout the home."

EMS arrived on the scene and later declared the child dead at the scene. The mother along with her 13-year-old and 17-year-old daughters were all taken to the hospital and treated for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Their conditions are unknown at this time. Police did not arrest the mother.
