Airline Drive went mostly under water near Orleans/Jefferson line during storms

A lot of rain, close to double digits in some areas, have flooded several Jefferson Parish streets.

METAIRIE, La. — Widespread street flooding is being reported throughout Jefferson Parish due to heavy rainfall.

One of the worst spots is on Airline Drive near the Jefferson/Orleans line where cars are slowly moving through it and others are turning around.

All residents are urged to stay off the roads at this time. Jefferson Parish was under a Flash Flood Emergency until 3:45 p.m.

Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng is concerned about the flooded streets and the canal on West Esplanade, which was rising dangerously close to street level.

"You don't know where the canal starts and stops," she said.

Jefferson Parish public schools, one of the few systems not to close Wednesday, despite the unusually high risk for severe weather, had to delay dismissal due to people being urged to stay off the roads.
