The Lafourche Parish Council is supporting Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle in his refusal to sue oil and gas companies over wetlands damage.
Gov. John Bel Edwards issued letters to coastal parishes that say if they do not file suit then the state will do so on their behalf.
Cantrelle and Terrebonne Parish President Gordy Dove, along with other local officials, met with Edwards recently to express their opposition to the suit. Dove also hand-delivered a letter to Edwards expressing the same, which Cantrelle signed.
The council voted unanimously to pass the resolution Tuesday night, saying it will not join the lawsuit.
The Terrebonne Parish Council passed a similar resolution last year.
At the start of the meeting, the council went into a closed session to discuss "coastal restoration litigation."
Council Chairman Jerry LaFont proposed rescinding the contract with the law firm that was hired to look into filing such a lawsuit. The parish hired Block Law Firm of Thibodaux in June to represent the parish on the case. The parish did not end up addressing the item at the meeting and instead held it for a later date.
