Several Northshore rivers enter flood stage after heavy rain

The deluge of rain over such a short amount of time spiked river levels, causing the Bogue Chitto, Bogue Falaya, Tchefunte rivers to enter flood stage at several locations.

NEW ORLEANS — Heavy rain stalled over southeast Louisiana Friday morning, dumping up to 11 inches of rain on parts of the Northshore.

In Washington Parish, emergency leaders estimate as many as 30 homes flooded due to the rain.

"Our concern right now turns to our river stages," Bobbi Jo Breland, an assistant OHSEP director in Washington Parish, said.

The deluge of rain over such a short amount of time spiked river levels, causing the Bogue Chitto, Bogue Falaya, Tchefunte rivers to enter flood stage at several locations. Those rivers are expected to rise in some places, which could cause additional flooding to nearby areas.

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for parts of St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes.

Here is an overview of the rivers currently in flood stage.

Bogue Chitto River at Franklinton

Forecasted Crest18 feet at 6 p.m. Friday

Under the current forecast, the NWS predicts that property along the east bank below the Franklinton bridge will be flooded. Bogue Chitto Heights subdivision will flood. Homes on the west bank north of Louisiana Highway 10 will flood. 

Tchefuncte River near Folsom

Forecasted Crest: 22 feet at 6 p.m. Friday

Under the current forecast, the NWS predicts that Louisiana Highway 40 will overflow the west bank near the bridge. Homes in the Spring Park and Albert Thompson Road will be flooded. Flood water would threaten homes near Savannah Branch, Bennet Bridge Road and low lying areas of Louisiana Highway 1077 downstream of the Highway 40 bridge. 

Tchefuncte River near Covington

Forecasted Crest: 27.9 feet at 6 a.m. Saturday

Under the current forecast, the NWS predicts that the Tchefuncte River campground will be under a few inches of water. The Goodbee community would be threatened with flooding and water would invade Camp Tchefuncte's parking lot.

If the river reached 28 feet, Flowers Estates will be inundated and a few homes not elevated will flood. Homes along Old Landing and Riverbend Lane will flood. Homes near Highway 1077 and in the Tantella Ranch Road area will flood.

Bogue Falaya River near Camp Covington

Forecasted Crest: 52.5 feet at 6 p.m. Friday

Under the current forecast, the NWS predicts that property along the east bank will be inundated. The entrance driveway near the east bank gauge will become impassable. Water will cover Million Dollar Road at the intersection of KC Camp Road.

Bogue Falaya River at Boston Street

Forecasted Crest: 11 feet at 6 a.m. Saturday

Under the current forecast, the NWS predicts that there will be major flooding around Christ Episcopal School and the Bogue Falaya River Park.

Tangipahoa River at Robert

Forecasted Crest: 19 feet at 12 a.m. Sunday

Under the current forecast, the NWS predicts that water will threaten the trailers at Hidden Oaks. Water will cover the entrance to the campgrounds. Secondary roads and unimproved roads north of Robert will flood at Chappepeela Creek backs up. Low places on Highway 22 south of Robert will be under water.
