FRANKLINTON, La. — Two members of the Franklinton Police Department went into a burning apartment building several times Tuesday night - rescuing a woman who had been badly burned, according to the department's Facebook Page.

Sergeant William Manning and Lieutenant James Holmes were responding to a fire at the Fairgrounds Apartments in Franklinton and were told that an adult and two children lived at the address.

The two officers went inside and found a badly-burned woman who was unable to escape. They were able to get her to safety. The officers went back into the building two more times to try to find children, but none were located inside.

The department's Facebook page said that the woman was rescued, but there was no immediate word on her condition. Officer Manning was taken to the Riverside Medical Center where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

"Their selfless efforts, which came at extreme danger to themselves, prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring apartments and potentially claiming the life of other residents," said the post.

Manning and Holmes have submitted the officers for the American Police Hall of Fame Silver Star for Bravery and the Life Saving Award.
