Video: Oil wellhead leaking into Barataria Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard tells WWL-TV that the oil leak is now secured and cleanup is underway.

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La. — A possible oil spill in Barataria Bay was caught on video.

The video sent to us by Adam Songy, shows what appears to be oil spewing out of two wellheads and into the water.

The viewer tells us he was in Barataria Bay yesterday and saw oil spewing into it from two wellheads, 8 miles south of Lafitte in Little Lake, Turtle Bay.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the leak has been secured and is no longer discharging oil into the bay.

The wellhead owner, EXTX Operating, has hired an oil spill response organization and deployed an oil spill boom to clean up and contain the oil slick on the water according to the Coast Guard.

Coast Guard officials also say they are overseeing the cleanup efforts along with multiple agencies. What caused the oil leak is unknown at this time.
