NOPD starts crackdown on Sunday hangout under Claiborne overpass

The New Orleans Police department claims that the vending that typically occurs under the overpass is illegal.

NEW ORLEANS — The NOPD said that they will start regulating vehicular traffic underneath the North Claiborne overpass in an effort to curb illegal street racing and vending.

A spokesperson for the NOPD said that the area will remain open to pedestrian traffic, with periodic openings for vehicular traffic restricted to one lane in either direction.

"This action is being taken to address illegal street racing/burnout activity in the area, as well as to address issues with illegal vending and to address an increase in violent crime incidents in the area," the spokesperson said.

Amber Robinson, who goes to the underpass to party on weekends, spoke to WWL-TV's Erika Ferrando about this new development.

"Normally the traffic is heavy. Everybody is under the bridge. There’s a lot of music, vendors out here, food, alcohol being sold, you have a line here for Cajuns," Robinson said. "It's really busy, so to see it like this...this is different. This is really different."
