Ruby Slipper raising money for cook wounded in shooting

Caesar, a long-time cook at The Ruby Slipper, was severely wounded in a shooting on April 22.

NEW ORLEANS -- One of New Orleans' favorite brunch spots is raising money to help a chef wounded in a random act of violence.

The Ruby Slipper will donate 10 percent of all sales today from all New Orleans' locations to help Gilbert "Manny" Caesar pay his medical bills.

Caesar was shot during a violent crime spree in St. Roch on April 22.

"Manny worked as a Ruby Slipper cook at the Canal Street location for several years, and his Ruby Slipper family is deeply saddened by this random act of violence that resulted in Manny’s severe injuries," a statement from the restaurant said. "The restaurant seeks to lessen the burden of his medical costs while also raising awareness about the terrible incident that occurred to help prevent future gun violence in the city."
