Tax propositions abound Louisiana municipal elections

St. Tammany, St. Bernard and St. John, are among 45 parishes with proposals in Saturday's municipal election. Jefferson Parish has a competitive district judge race.

LOUISIANA, USA — Polls opened at 7 a.m. on Saturday for the municipal elections in Louisiana, which offer voters competitive races in 45 parishes including Southeast Louisiana.

Eight tax propositions are on St. Tammany Parish ballots, including a sales tax for the Slidell Police Department. 

According to NOLA.com, the tax has been endorsed by Slidell P.D. Chief Randy Fandal who said the bill would generate $4.5 million for salary increases, new department headquarters and a city jail. 

Depending on the district, St. Tammany voters will decide whether to put their tax dollars toward recreation districts in Mandeville and the Bush area, as well as funding for Fire District 5 in the Folsom area.

In St. Bernard a $43-million tax proposal for firefighters and fire protection, would replace four smaller and separate tax millages. 

St. John Parish voters have the opportunity to consider an amendment that would set the parish councilmembers salary at $19,200 and $24,000 for at-large members. 

Parts of Tangipahoa, Washington, Livingston and St. Helena will decide whether to sponsor funding for a juvenile district across the Florida parishes.

A judicial district court seat runoff in Jefferson Parish has been scheduled among a series of races on the ballot for Saturday's municipal election in Louisiana.    

Two Republican attorneys --  Jacqueline "Jackie" Maloney and Lindsey Valenti -- will appear on the ballot for most of Jefferson Parish's Eastbank, excluding south Kenner. Valenti and Maloney have been competing for the 24th judicial district. 

Polls close at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
