NEW ORLEANS — Brittney Griner will see her No. 42 jersey go up in the rafters Sunday, when the No. 21 Bears go against Texas Tech, according to our partners at Nola.com.

"That's awesome," said LSU coach Kim Mulkey in a news conference Thursday, as she spoke about Baylor's decision to retire Griner's jersey number. Mulkey coached Griner for four seasons at Baylor.

"I bet it'll be a great environment", she said.

Since 2013 when Griner was declared for the WNBA Draft, she has not visited Waco, Texas, Nola.com reported.

Griner was detained in Russia in 2022 and Mulkey declined to comment on Griner's situation until she was released. Instead, Mulkey issued a statement to ESPN, "offering prayers to Griner and her family."

Baylor coach Nicki Collen also commented on the retirement of Griner's jersey, saying it was an honor to have Brittney back on campus.

"I have been saying this since I arrived at Baylor that she deserves to have her jersey retired, and I wanted to make sure that happened when the timing was right."

Mulkey and Griner teamed up to lead Baylor to 135 wins from 2009 until 2013, two trips to the Final Four and one national championship, "which capped an undefeated 40-0 season in 2012," Nola.com reported.
