'He could have killed someone – or himself' | Police say of Chris Olave's arrest for excessive speeding

Kenner police flagged Saints wide receiver Chris Olave for unsportsmanlike conduct on the road.

KENNER, La. — Kenner police flagged Saints wide receiver Chris Olave for unsportsmanlike conduct on the road.

Monday night, they arrested him for reckless driving for reportedly going 70 in a 35 mile per hour zone near his house in the 1700 block of Joe Yenni Blvd.

Olave was just around the corner from his home when police pulled him over.

They allowed him to park his Dodge Challenger in his driveway before arresting him.

KPD released a body camera video of Olave’s arrest.

“So, you all are arresting me,” Olave told the arresting officer. “I play for the Saints.”

KPD spokesman Capt. Michael Cunningham said they arrested Olave for more than just speeding.

“Of course, he wasn’t happy that he was being arrested, but he was very cooperative. He was maneuvering between lanes, in between cars, putting those other drivers in danger. So, the officer initiated a traffic stop.”

Cunningham says they stopped Olave for his safety and the safety of others on the road.

“At that high rate of speed, at 70, he probably was going faster than that, if he would have clipped another one of those cars, he could have killed someone in the other car, he could have killed himself. He could have had an injury that could be career ending for him.”

According to police, this wasn’t the first time Olave’s apparent need for speed ended up getting him a ticket in Kenner.

Last August, he was cited for doing 54 in a 35 mile per hour zone in the 2300 block of Vintage Drive.

Five people have died in traffic accidents so far this year in Kenner. As a result, police are now cracking down on speeders in the city.

“We want to lower the number of our fatalities,” Cunningham said. “We want to lower the number of accidents in Kenner. So, we’re going to be proactively out there enforcing these speed laws.”

Olave was booked into the Kenner jail.

He was released before midnight.

In a statement, the Saints said they were aware of Olive’s arrest.

He was expected to participate in a Boys and Girls Club shopping spree at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Metairie, Monday evening.

That event was abruptly cancelled after his arrest.
