Armstrong Airport preps for holiday travel amid arctic blast

Several airlines have already alerted customers, and some have given flyers the option to change flights now, free of charge.

NEW ORLEANS — AAA estimates around 113 million people across the country will travel 50 or more miles from home for the holidays.

The majority of those people are expected to drive, but if you're flying out of MSY, be prepared for changes.

The arctic weather making its way across the U.S. is expected to unravel holiday plans.

Several airlines have already alerted customers, and some have given flyers the option to change flights now, free of charge.

“I got an email about the winter storm, but I really wasn’t concerned because we’re staying in the south," one woman flying out of MSY said.

Her family was traveling to Orlando, but another man said he was flying to Philadelphia for the holidays.

“I’m headed to Philadelphia," he said, “I think I’m just going to miss it.”

Louisiana AAA Spokesperson, Dan Redman, said if you're traveling north of Louisiana you may want to reconsider your plans.

“If you haven’t canceled your flight now, you’re really running out of time," Redman said.

On Wednesday afternoon, the crowds were steady at Louis Armstrong International.

According to Erin Burns, director of communications for the airport, Thursday is supposed to be their busiest day of the holiday travel season.

“So far, not seeing any major impacts to flight schedules in New Orleans," Burns said, " However, we do know there will be some impacts in other cities. So, always check with your airline for the latest information.”

Burns said the airport takes care of any ice on the airfield and runways, but deicing planes is up to the airlines.

The same thing takes place at the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, according to marketing director Jim Caldwell.

“It’s not necessarily common for New Orleans, but it is something that they do, and they’re prepared and looking into that for this upcoming weather," Burns said.

Both BTR and the Gulfport-Biloxi airport also recommended continuing to check with your airline for any changes or cancellations.

Caldwell said it will be connecting flights and destinations north of Louisiana to watch out for.
