New Orleans homicide suspect arrested in Miami, now awaiting extradition

Kendrick McGee is accused of killing a 28-year-old man on Canal Street in November 2023.

NEW ORLEANS — A wanted suspect accused of killing a man in the 800 block of Canal Street last November was arrested in Miami Beach, Fla., on Wednesday.

The New Orleans Police Department confirmed the arrest of 38-year-old Kendrick McGee in connection with the fatal shooting of Timothy Sams, 28, on Nov. 22.

The New Orleans Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for McGee on Dec. 1 after investigators identified him as the perpetrator in the homicide.

According to WWL Louisiana media partner Nola.com, McGee was originally taken into custody at the time of the incident when two off-duty Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office deputies working as security guards in the area responded to the sound of gunshots.

McGee was immediately apprehended but escaped custody while in handcuffs as the guards allegedly turned their attention toward a second person.

The suspect is currently awaiting extradition to New Orleans from Miami-Dade County.
