NEW ORLEANS — For the second time in a little over two weeks a student at Warren Easton has died as a result of a shooting, the school confirmed Tuesday.

Detectives with the New Orleans Police Department are investigating after a juvenile male was shot dead in the St Roch neighborhood shortly before 9:00 p.m. Monday in the 3000 block of St. Roch Avenue.

When responding officers arrived on the scene, they learned that the juvenile male victim was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle. The victim later died at the hospital.

Family members have identified the victim as 15-year-old Tyler Ellis, a freshman at Warren Easton High School. They said he is a straight-A student who played football locally for a club called the Dolphins.

The NOPD announced a 15-year-old is being charged with negligent homicide for the fatal shooting which investigators believe was an accident.

Tyler is the second Warren Easton student lost to gun violence in just the past few weeks.

In late January, Kennedi Belton, a student at Easton was at a sleepover when an apparent accidental gun discharge in the next room struck her.

The school sent out a statement on Monday's fatal shooting:

Warren Easton Charter High School is truly heart broken that gun violence continues to impact our city's young people, and tragically, another one of our students. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family affected. At Warren Easton, our entire school community is committed to making every effort to build a future of promise for New Orleans. In the meantime, we will continue to offer counseling and additional supports to students, staff, and faculty to help our school community cope with this loss and heal.
