NEW ORLEANS — For the first time in more than a decade, enrollment has risen for two straight years at the University of New Orleans.
The fall enrollment of 8,231 students is up 80 from last year, when UNO reported its first increase in nine years.
Last year's increase was nearly 2% above the previous year's 7,964 students. This year's increase is 1%.
President John Nicklow says it's modest but UNO is thrilled to be growing, especially when enrollment's falling at many universities.
Overall, undergraduate enrollment rose nearly 2%. The number of out-of-state U.S. students rose 7.8% and in-state enrollment rose 1.3%.
One quarter of all freshmen are African American, up nearly 10% from last year.
The university had more than 17,000 students registered before Hurricane Katrina devastated the region in 2005.
