Clancy's Commentary: Gov. Landry pushes for constitutional convention, wants more power

"He's asking lawmakers to rewrite the state constitution, end government transparency, and give him unfettered control over state government" opines Clancy DuBos.

BATON ROUGE, La. — In addition to pushing for a constitutional convention, Governor Jeff Landry wants lawmakers to give him even more power than he already has.

We all know the famous maxim, “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” We saw that happen a century ago when Governor Huey Long made himself a virtual dictator. It did not end well for Long or for Louisiana.

Now, Governor Jeff Landry aspires to outdo Long.

He’s asking lawmakers to rewrite the state constitution, end government transparency, and give him unfettered control over state government. He even wants to expand the state Supreme Court and appoint all (currently elected) justices. Even Long didn’t go that far.

Landry says voters elected him to turn Louisiana around. What he’s promoting would turn Louisiana into a dictatorship — and no one voted for that. Except maybe Jeff Landry. And he kept that a secret, until now.
