Clancy's Commentary: The list of candidates for governor continues to grow

NEW ORLEANS — The list of candidates for governor continues to grow. Today, one potential candidate announced he’s not running, but two others decided to join the contest.

We won’t know till August who’s officially running for governor, but the field is already taking shape — especially among Republicans.

Today, Republican Congressman Garret Graves announced he won’t run. Meanwhile, Steve Waguespack, president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry — and a former top aide to Governor Bobby Jindal — says he may run.

The Republican field already includes Attorney General Jeff Landry, state Treasurer John Schroder, state Senator Sharon Hewitt, and state Representative Richard Nelson, and it could grow further.

Yesterday, former state Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson became the first Democrat to announce, and today he picked up the endorsement of his former boss, Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards. No-party independent Hunter Lundy, an attorney, also has announced his candidacy.

With 5 months to go before qualifying, there’s still plenty of time for more candidates, especially Democrats. The primary is October 14th.
