'We just held onto each other and prayed' - tornado ravages St. Charles, one woman dead

A tornado touched down, causing severe damage in St. Charles Parish Wednesday afternoon.

NEW ORLEANS — A woman has died after a tornado touched down Wednesday afternoon in St. Charles Parish.

St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell issued a state of emergency early Wednesday afternoon, citing numerous downed power lines and blocked roads in the Killona area.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office is reporting heavy damage to residences in the area of Schoolhouse Road in Killona, and are still in the process of checking residencies in the area.

Mary Kenny, a Killona resident, recounted her account of the tornado as it approached. Kenny had been living in a trailer since Hurricane Ida while her home was being repaired. The new roof of her home was ripped off by the tornado.

"We were sitting in the trailer, and our cell phones went off and I said 'we've gotta get out of here, there's a tornado'... As soon as we got into the house, we got into the bathroom, in the tub. Our ears started popping and everything was gone, everything was falling on us," Kenny said.

"We just held onto each other and prayed. We just prayed."
