Man accused of spray painting anti-Semitic graffiti on Mandeville synagogue arrested, charged with hate crime

Police say the suspect posed in Nazi paraphernalia and wrote several pro-Nazi messages on his social media pages.

MANDEVILLE, La. — A 20-year-old Jefferson Parish man has been arrested for allegedly committing a hate crime at a Northshore synagogue back in 2018.

Cane Zander Brown, 20, was arrested and faces a felony hate crime charge after he allegedly spray painted anti-Semitic graffiti on the Northshore Jewish Congregation building.

Police say Brown spray painted anti-Semitic symbols and rhetoric including “synagogue of satan” and the numbers 14/88 next to it.  According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the 14 stands for “14 words,” a slogan coined by David Lane who is serving a 190 year prison sentence for his part in the assassination of a Jewish talk show host. Those 14 words are “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for our white children.”

The 88 stands for “Heil Hitler.” H is the eighth letter of the alphabet.

According to the Mandeville Police Department, Brown’s cellphone records showed that he was in the area of the synagogue when the hate crime occurred. Police were also able to get a statement from “a confidential source” saying that Brown admitted to the crime.

According to police, Brown made several social media posts detailing his Nazi beliefs, denying the Holocaust ever happened and using the term “synagogue of satan.”

Police also said Brown posted pictures of himself in Nazi paraphernalia.

Brown was arrested at his home in Jefferson and is currently being held in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. He will be transferred to St. Tammany Parish Jail and booked on one count criminal damage of property and one count felony hate crime.
